Trying to scandisk a W95 machine - I've booted into Safe Mode, turned
off everything except Explorer, and turned off the screen saver. I'm
STILL getting the "Scan disk gas restarted 10 times etc etc" message.
What do I do now to get it to scandisk? (It's a machine at work and so
I have to run housekeeping overnight....)

Thanks

Sounds like a possible virus or spyware infestation.

Make certain that the anitivirus software is completely up to date and
do a full virus scan of the system. If the machine is on the
Internet then double check this with a free online virus scan at one
of the following sites:
http://housecall.trendmicro.com
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/

Check for and remove spyware by following MVP Jim Eshelman's Quick Fix
procedure at http://www.aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm

Have you tried running Scandisk in DOS mode? Turn on the computer,
press F8 at the "Starting Windows 95...." message and select Command
Prompt from the menu.

At the C:\> prompt enter the following commands:
SMARTDRV
SCANDISK

Good luck
